It's repetitive combat and lackluster visuals, strung through with a few bright spots of naval combat and exploration, and unique displays of combat. Narratively, the game is as weak as they come. Exactly this. It’s the same engine as black flag so it looks similar, but the small changes to ship combat and sea activities really make it so much more enjoyable.
